I have a Non-Cystic Mass? What is the chance that this is breast cancer?

I noticed a cherry sized lump in my right breast about a month ago and got a breast exam last week to see what it was, my dr said she thinks its a cyst but wanted me to get an ultrasound to make sure
Well the results came back today and it says i have a “rounded heterogeneous non cystic mass” measuring 2cm x 1.8cm x 1.3cm
It says “the lesion is non vascular and there is a minor degree of posterior enhancement and edge shadowing”

Im not familiar with the medical jargon and my dr didnt seem too clear (he wants me to do a biopsy next week to see what it is)….but i just want to know, is there a likely chance this is breast cancer?

Im really worried. Im 22 years old with no known history of breast cancer, i have an appointment booked in a week with a specialist but its really hard waiting that long without knowing anything.

Any help would be appreciated

Your doctor really should tell you what he THINKS it may be. If it’s not a cyst then what is his next best diagnosis?

Non-cystic = it’s not a cyst. Not helpful, I know.

Rounded = good. Breast cancers tend to have irregular edges.

Heterogeneous = means that the growth is of varying density and possibly varying material. This can be suspicious and is probably one of the main reasons your doc is sending you to a specialist.

Non-vascular (not connected to blood vessels or receiving a blood source – cancer often attaches to blood lines to feed off the nutrients) and minor degree of posterior enhancement (means that it has a slight thicker wall, think of like an amniotic sac around a growing baby) and edge shadowing (which is non-specific, since ultrasound measures density it could mean that there is an infection, I’m not a doctor and cannot diagnose those findings).

Again I am not a doctor but I have had SEVERAL lumps and this sounds like the lumps that I’ve had in the past. They have all been benign. Sometimes they can look like cancer on ultrasounds so they will want to collect a sample by doing a needle biopsy. But right now you don’t know anything for sure so try not to worry just yet – just roll with the punches for now. The breast specialist will be able to answer all your questions soon.
