This nationwide confusion has prompted a bipartisan proposal to require credentials be disclosed in all medical advertising.

The Healthcare Truth and Transparency Act

Introduced to Congress on January 26, 2011, the Healthcare Truth and Transparency Act would require anyone providing medical care to honestly and openly disclose their credentials. Backed by thousands of doctors as well as the American Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Association, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists, this bill is similar to measures adopted in Arizona, California, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. It would, for the first time, make such disclosure required on a national level.

Board Certification

When selecting a breast augmentation surgeon, it is important to know that they have received board certification. The primary boards that certify plastic surgeons are:

American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)
American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)

It is also a good idea to make sure they are certified through their state medical association as well.

To become a board-certified plastic surgeon, a doctor must graduate from an accredited medical school and then complete:

Three years of training in general surgery in an accredited residency program
Two years of training in plastic surgery in an accredited residency program
Continued practice for at least six months, during which time all operative reports and preoperative and postoperative photographs are accepted by a panel of board-certified plastic surgeons
Pass a final comprehensive written and oral exam

This additional training provides your plastic surgeon with the necessary background to perform successful, aesthetically pleasing breast augmentations. Knowing your plastic surgeon is board-certified helps ensure your results will match your desired goals.
